Former Douglas County Vice-Chairman Commissioner Tarenia Carthan is a native of Atlanta and holds a Computer Information Systems degree and a BS in Health & Human Services degree as a graduate of Atlanta Christian College. As an entrepreneur and minority business owner in the field of Cyber Security Governance, Risk & Compliance and Disaster Recovery Planning, Carthan has served in the healthcare and technology sectors for over 20 years. As the Co-Founder of Angels N Tech, Angels & Me Foundation she is committed to increasing the diversity of faces in the STEM fields.
Tarenia Carthan was first elected to office in 2018 and re-elected in 2022 to her 2nd term of a 4-year position. She is passionate about service to her community and extending opportunities for minority business owners to gain experience and grow their business. During her first year as a Commissioner, Carthan sponsored legislation to put into place Douglas County’s first Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE). This legislation ensures the county would do business with veteran owned, women owned, disabled owned, and minority owned businesses when seeking procurement of goods and services as a first choice. So far, that initiative has landed DBE’s in the county to gain more than 50% of the 2016-SPLOST spend in services.
During her tenure as County Commissioner, Carthan served as the Chairman for the Economic Development and Transportation Committee and a voting member of the Policy Committee on the Association For County Commissioners of Georgia. She also served on NaCo Health and Human Services Committee as Co-Chairman of the Medicaid and Indigent Sub-Committee and led legislation that was passed at the 2023 conference for Women’ Reproductive Rights.
As the Board of Commissioners dealt with the removal of the former Chairwoman in 2023, Vice-Chairman Carthan stepped in to serve as Chairman until the Governor appointed a temporary Chairman. At the urging of community leaders and being committed to serving Douglas County, Carthan decided to re-sign her seat as Vice-Chair and District 3 Commissioner in February of 2024 and seek election to office as Chairman of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners.
Douglas County needs leadership it can count on. A leader who can take office on Day One and SHIFT the county from the past into a bright future.
Tarenia Carthan is the mother of four daughters and is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, The Links Incorporated, and The Order of the Eastern Star. When not working on projects, advocating for others, or serving with various community members, she can be found reading and watching football.
